SUB NURSE

REGISTERED NURSE LICENSE REQUIRED.  POSITION WORKS AS NEEDED.

 

 Qualifications:

            Bachelor’s Degree (BSN)

            Kansas State Board of Nursing License

            One year experience as a Registered Nurse

            Current certification in CardioPulmonary Resuscitation

 

Reports to:

            Building Administrator and Nursing Facilitator

 

Job Goal:

Advance the well being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students.

 

Performance responsibilities include, but not limited to the following:

Health Appraisal:

  • Evaluates the physical health, developmental level and psychosocial status of the student.
  • Audits all health records for compliance with state statutes and district policy.
  • Conducts hearing and vision screening programs with appropriate referrals. Interprets results to parents and teachers and assists in follow-up.
  • Interprets medical findings to the students, parents, and appropriate school personnel. Makes recommendations concerning the student's educational program.
  • Works closely with building administrators and staff concerning prolonged absence and/or current physical and mental health concerns of students.
  • Insures that dental evaluation and follow-up are available to all students.
  • Assists with preschool screening and kindergarten enrollment programs. (Elementary schools only)

 

Illness and First Aid:

  • Supervises the school health office.
  • Implements district/state policies and national standards for students/staff that are ill or injured at school.
  • Provides first aid/nursing care to students and staff. Refers students to care of parent or other responsible person if further attention is required. Coordinates employee injury reporting with Employee Benefits manager.
  • Administers medications in accordance with district policy and state statutes.
  • Assesses the school environment for potential safety hazards and sanitary conditions and reports findings to the building administration.
  • Trains staff in standard precautions, first aid procedures, medication administration and other nursing procedures if indicated.

 

Health Education:

  • Utilizes health services as an opportunity to provide health education and counseling.
  • Serves as a consultant and resource person for health education programs.
  • Collaborates with building staff in presenting health education instruction.
  • Assists building staff in obtaining resource materials for health related instruction.

 

Exceptional Children:

  • Serves on the building screening team to assist in identifying, evaluating, and planning for exceptional children.
  • Assists with recommendations and modification in the educational program when indicated by the health and/or developmental status of the student.
  • Participates with staff in developing a Student Improvement Plan (SIP), 504 accommodations, or Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
  • Collaborates with staff, parents, and medical care providers to develop, revise and implement an Individualized Health Care Plan (IHCP) for the health needs of students with temporary and permanent disabilities.

 

Communicable Disease:

  • Insure that each student has immunizations as mandated by district policies and state immunization laws.
  • Establishes and maintains a program for communicable disease control as outlined by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department, and Lawrence Public Schools.

 

Recordkeeping:

  • Prepares and maintains cumulative health records for all students and uses the electronic record keeping system.

Counseling:

  • Assists with health counseling for students, parents and school personnel upon request.
  • Interprets the student's health, developmental status and medical findings to the student, parent, and school personnel.
  • Assesses students and family mental health needs and makes appropriate recommendations.

 

Communications:

  • Represents nursing programs to buildings served.
  • Serves as liaison between nursing programs and community agencies.
  • Upholds regulations and laws related to confidentiality, reporting of child abuse and neglect, and other health-related requirements.

 

Critical Skills:

  • Possess and maintain licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Kansas.
  • Articulate ideas to groups in a logical and forthright manner.
  • Demonstrate composition skills suitable for producing written communication for a variety of readers.
  • Analyze a situation quickly and provide prompt advice and intervention if needed.
  • Perform job responsibilities using applicable software on district computer system and communication equipment.
  • Manage job responsibilities while meeting established deadlines.
  • Work constructively and cooperatively with others.
  • Respects the dignity, confidentiality, and rights of all students and staff.

 

The tasks listed in this position are subject to change at the discretion of the superintendent/designee. The incumbent is expected to take on other duties as requested or assigned by his/her supervisor.
