Purpose Statement
The job of ESL Translator/Interpreter is done for the purpose/s of translating school-related documents, administering English Language Learner assessments, analyzing situations and communicating with community, parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators.
Essential Functions
- Administer required English Language Learner identification and outcome measures for the purpose of ensuring that state and federal programs guidelines are met.
- Assist with communication to parents/guardians regarding special programs (e.g. special education and ESOL, etc.) for the purpose of making parents/guardians aware of educational opportunities available for their student(s).
- Exhibit language skills (e.g. accurate translation and interpret conversation verbatim, etc.) for the purpose of establishing and/or maintaining clear channels of communications between staff and parents/guardians of different cultures.
- Interpret or translate information for parents/guardians (e.g. school and district related information such as newsletters, classroom newsletters, notices, parent involvement materials, flyers for special activities, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining clear channels of communication between school personnel and parents/guardians.
- Maintain contact with various groups (e.g. district personnel, parents, vendors, and customers from the community, etc.) for the purpose of providing a support network for concerned parties.
- Monitor translations/interpreting services for the purpose of determining if adequate services are being provided.
- Provide information about non-school related resources to parents/guardians for the purpose of informing them of available social service, health, and community agencies.
- Solicit resources for additional translation and interpretation for the purpose of assisting with languages not being supported by the District Translator.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to district policies; and regular attendance except when taking approved leave.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 30% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment.
Experience Job related experience is required.
Education Targeted, job related education with study in job-related area.
