Purpose Statement

The job of Parent Involvement Facilitator is done for the purpose/s of coordinating activities which enhance parent participation in two-way meaningful communication with the school regarding student academic learning and other school activities; ensuring that parents play an integral part in assisting their child's learning by being actively involved in their child's education at school; and helping parents understand their role as a full partner in their child's education.

 

Essential Functions

• Assesses needs and designs, organizes and facilitates workshops (e.g. day, evening, and/or weekends, etc.) for the purpose of providing information, resources, and support to parents enhancing their overall parenting skills.
• Assists parents in enhancing their skills (e.g. referring parents to parent education classes, at home student activities, and adult education classes, etc.) for the purpose of being actively involved in their child's education.
• Collaborates with others (e.g. district personnel parents, community organizations, etc.) for the purpose of implementing and maintaining services and/or programs.
• Communicates with parents, teachers, and community organizations for the purpose of strengthening parent/school/community relationships.
• Complies with all district policies and procedures (e.g. Blood borne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan, etc.) for the purpose of meeting district, state, and federal requirements.
• Conducts home visits for the purpose of enhancing appropriate parenting skills related to the academic success of their student.
• Coordinates resources (e.g. transportation, child care, etc.) for the purpose of providing the parent an opportunity to become an active participant in school activities/organizations.
• Encourages parent-initiated school contacts (e.g. PTA, PTO, parent volunteerism, and Parent-Teacher Conferences, site council, etc.) for the purpose of involving the parent as an active participant in their child's education.
• Identifies parent concerns for the purpose of communicating with teachers and administrators.
• Informs parents of community-based educational opportunities (e.g. after school programs, etc.) for the purpose of providing additional academic support beyond the regular academic school day.
• Maintains a variety of paper and electronic records/documents (confidential and non-confidential) (e.g. parent contacts, student records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or ensuring documentation for future reference in accordance with administrative and legal requirements.
• Monitors student attendance for the purpose of causes for resolution or solution.
• Participates in staff development activities and professional growth opportunities for the purpose of keeping current on new information, innovative ideas, and techniques.
• Performs other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by administrator(s) for the purpose of fulfilling the needs of the organization.
• Promotes the importance of parent involvement with school personnel (e.g. principal, teachers, and building staff, etc.) for the purpose of providing effective methods and tools for working with parents as equal partners.
• Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. administrators, teachers, outside agencies, etc.) for the purpose of providing requested information, referrals, and/or solving problems.
• Supports and assists teachers and administrators (e.g. electronic, in person, paper, phone, etc.) for the purpose of parent communications.

Other Functions

• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Job Requirements:  Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: strong organizational skills; successful experience working with parents and children.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems.  Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: knowledge of Lawrence Public Schools and community resources;  ensure all activities conform to Federal, State, and District guidelines.

ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communication skills with diverse groups or individuals; meet deadlines; need to flexible regarding scheduling, working conditions, and locations; adhering to district policies; and regular attendance except when taking approved leave.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to effect the organization’s services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling,  frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 25% walking, and 35% standing.  The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Experience      Job related experience is required.

Education        High school diploma or equivalent.

Equivalency    PARENT INVOLVEMENT FACILITATOR, REQUIRE a minimum of 48 college credit hours, OR the successful completion of a state approved Paraeducator Assessment.
