The job of Coordinator - School Garden is done for the purpose/s of promoting and administering a school garden integrated based curriculum program that encourages student, staff and community involvement.
Essential Functions
- Advocates school gardens in the school community (e.g. teachers, administrators, students, parents, and community volunteers, etc.) for the purpose of promoting involvement and commitment to the garden projects.
- Assists other related school to garden personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
- Coordinates garden related activities for the purpose of ensuring the program is in compliance with the facilities and operations standards for garden layouts and overall upkeep of space.
- Demonstrates and practices accepted gardening/horticulture knowledge for the purpose of managing the overall operation of the school garden.
- Develops, coordinates, and monitors garden related activities for the purpose of ensuring the program is in compliance with Farm to School guidelines/regulations.
- Directs and coordinates the garden market for the purpose of exposing student to marketing skills as well as providing income from garden produce.
- Documents measurable components (e.g. inventory, revenue, expenditures, etc.) for the purpose of exposing student to marketing skills as well as providing income from garden produce.
- Establishes and communicates a work schedule to student gardeners, garden assistants, volunteers (e.g. ensuring adequate garden maintenance is addressed, ) for the purpose of ensuring all aspects of garden maintenance is addressed.
- Instructs all garden workers with relevant safety training (e.g. proper use of tools, ) for the purpose of promoting a hazard free work zone.
- Maintains a variety of records (e.g. timeclock, inventory, revenue, expenditures, ) for the purpose of providing documentation and compliance with the preapproved budget.
- Maintains garden (e.g. watering, weeding, planting, harvesting, ) for the purpose of growing a healthy/hardy garden.
- Promotes and provides assistance with the district's health and wellness curriculum (e.g. teachers implementing curriculum relative to gardening, garden activities to enhance participants learning opportunities, ) for the purpose of promotiong the importance of fresh food and physical activity as an integral part of a healthy lifestyle.
- Publicizes the Farm to School garden program to various groups (e.g. parents, staff, volunteers, community members, ) for the purpose of communicating the objectives/advantages of the program.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in orper to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions.of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating gardening equipment/tools; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; use pertinent software applications; computer and project management skills.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read and follow instructions; and understand written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: understanding of farm to schools goals, practices, and philosophy; knowledge of food policy, including environmental, health, and social issues is preferred.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: being attentive to detail; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; establishing effective working relationships with diverse populations including youth and adults; strong networking; and strong verbal and written communication abilities. '
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational policies to achieve organizational objectives; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and some fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 20% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes.

Job related experience is required.
Targeted, job related education with study in job-related area.
$13.00 an hour.
